Fancy rat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The fancy (or pet) rat is a domesticated breed of the Brown Rat (Rattus norvegicus).
The origin of the fancy rat is probably the rat-catchers of the late 19th century who trapped rats and were paid by town governments per rat, and who also kept certain rats for exhibition/gambling fights.
Although rats are generally nocturnal, many pet rat owners have found their fancy rats to be crepuscular instead: most active for a few hours around dawn and dusk, napping for a few hours at a stretch between these times.

Rat & Mouse Gazette: The Himalayan Variety
Fortunately, the rat fancy is free from the sort of animal apartheid which holds that only those with a certain "pure" genetic composition can be classified as a "true" example of its variety.
Over the years, breeders have worked hard to bring the Himalayan rat closer to the standard, which states that the points should be a "rich dark sepia (as dark as possible)." However, their efforts have often been limited by the assumption that Himalayan rats should have a certain genetic makeup.
Rats which are ch c never develop points which are as dark and well-defined as those which are ch ch.

 AFRMA - The Siamese Rat
Siamese rats are fairly popular and rather flashy, so when you have a good one, it usually does well on the show bench.
This is why those areas on the rat which are cooler (nose, ears, feet, tail) have darker fur than the body which is warm.
When Siamese rats were first imported into the U.S., they were regarded as unusual and rare, and to pet shops this meant they were worth a lot of money.

Pet Rat Information Sheet - all you need for happy healthy pet rats
Rats normally leave their litter at 6 weeks of age; they are fully weaned from their mother at 4-5 weeks, but benefit greatly from staying with their breeder and being socialised until 6 weeks, since the period from 2-6 weeks of age is a crucial stage in the rat's mental and social development.
Rats are clean, intelligent, affectionate animals which bond to their human companions in much the same way that dogs do, and with the right care should provide a comparable level of companionship.
Rats should be kept in single-sex groups; if you keep un-neutered males and females together, they could produce a litter of 8-18 babies every 3-4 weeks for at least a year, leaving the mother exhausted and the babies undernourished.
