During the 19th century, many new states were added to the original thirteen as the nation expanded across the North American continent and acquired a number of overseas possessions.
After long debate, this was supplanted by the Constitution of a more centralized federal government in 1789.
Two of the major traumatic experiences in the nation's history were the American Civil War ( 1861 - 65) and the Great Depression of the 1930s.

U.S. National Forest - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There are frequent conflicts between timber companies and environmentalists over the use of national forest land.
That is, the land had long been in the private domain but was purchased by the United States government in order to create new national forests.
In these cases, the areas of national forest noted on most maps do not actually represent the extent of the national forest, but only the extent of the authorized purchase zone.

Judge halts plan to log burn area near Tahoe
England’s ruling prevents the Forest Service from taking “any further action” to pursue logging in that area.
In his ruling England noted the Forest Service estimated as much as 85 tons per acre of wooden debris would be left on the ground in most of the logged area after profitable timber was removed and that the government failed to show that would not make fire danger worse.
Much of the burned area has already been logged but environmental groups have battled to block salvage logging within Duncan Canyon, home to one of the largest continuous groves of old-growth forest within Tahoe National Forest.

New England Public Forest Advocates (NEPFA)
Forest Service administrators in DC are going along with the plan in hopes of gaining a consistent source of funding, independent of yearly Congressional bugeting whims -- in effect "selling out" the public in order to gain financial independence via fees and profit-sharing from private recreation industries.
The recreation industry is eager to win concession contracts to operate on our public lands and they plan to push hard for other major kinds of development: resorts, marinas, visitors' centers, condominiums, golf courses, etc. Anyone who has visited our National Parks can see the end result of a management philosophy that targets maximizing profits.
The Recreation Fee Demonstration Program was begun several years ago as a result of collaboration between recreation industry lobbyists, Forest Service officials, and a few legislators espousing an ill-conceived, entirely innappropriate version of what they conceived to be "free-market" ideology.
