Although the Alternative Front failed to deny the National Front its two-thirds parliamentary majority, post-election developments would indicate that it is imperative that efforst be made to deepen and strengthen the first multi-ethnic and multi-religious Opposition front to lay the basis for the creation of a two-coalition, if not a two-party, political system.
In the general elections, UMNO was the greatest casualty in the National Front and for the first time, UMNO had less parliamentary seats than the other coalition parties combined.
The last general election was therefore the most ambitious and wide-ranging attempt on the part of the Opposition in Malaysian politics to come up with a coherent and united front undergirded by a common election manifesto to take on the National Front juggernaut to cut it down to size by denying its parliamentary two-thirds majority.

 National Front (Czechoslovakia)
The National Front (in Czech : Národní fronta, in Slovak : Národný front) was a (permanent) coalition (or rather group) of parties – since 1948 also of various associations and mass organisations – from 1945 to 1990 in Czechoslovakia.
Thus, National Front candidates typically received more than 99 percent of the votes (voters in Czechoslovakia had the right to refrain from marking their ballots if they did not want to vote for any of the National Front candidates; however, few voters exercised that right for fear of official reprisal).
An important function of the National Front was to nominate all candidates for public office and to supervise elections.

Nor is the outcome of the March 21 vote much of a cliffhanger: most analysts predict that Abdullah's ruling National Front coalition will comfortably retain its two-thirds majority in Parliament.
There was little surprise when Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi last week dissolved Parliament and called a general election.
But the man who succeeded long-serving former PM Mahathir Mohamad last November has shown he intends big changes after the election.

 JTA NEWS
PARIS, March 22 (JTA) — France’s far-right National Front failed to make the sweeping gains many had initially feared in mid-term regional elections this week, but its base of nearly one in six French voters remains as strong as ever.
Nevertheless, support for the National Front remained strong in its traditional bases in northeast and southeast France, with its candidates garnering more than 20 percent of the vote in some regions.
With all results counted in France’s 22 mainland regions from the first round of regional elections March 21, the National Front took around 15 percent of the national vote, slightly less than its candidate and leader Jean-Marie Le Pen achieved in presidential elections in 2002.

Malaysian government routs Islamic fundamentalists in elections
Abdullah's National Front coalition won 30 of 32 seats in Terrengganu's state assembly and 26 of 45 seats in Kelantan, privately-owned TV3 reported -- huge swings against the fundamentalist Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party.
Seven hours after polls closed, Abdullah's National Front had won 110 of federal Parliament's 219 seats -- a simple majority that ensured its return to power, according to Electoral Commission figures.
The opposition claimed it was an election ploy, and that Abdullah's United Malays National Organization -- which has been the core of every governing coalition since independence from Britain in 1957 -- is rotten with greed and is leading Malaysia's Muslims down an immoral path.

AllRefer - Colombia - The Post-National Front Period, 1974-82 - The Erosion of Partisan Affiliations Colombian Information Resource
The experience of the National Front, the lack of organizational efforts by the parties, and the massive migrations from rural to urban areas weakened party affiliations, which also decreased the likelihood of interparty violence.
The period after the National Front also reflected a growing gap between the issues and agendas of the political elite and the demands, concerns, and expectations of the populace.
This weakening of party identification emerged as an unforeseen consequence of the nonpartisan structure of the National Front, in which party loyalty was less important than support for a particular faction.

Colombia - Post-National Front Political Developments
By early 1988, as the security situation continued to deteriorate nationwide, Barco came under increasing pressure to return to a national governing coalition similar to the old National Front.
He believed that the sharing of cabinet seats and other government posts under the old National Front arrangement stifled democracy by excluding other groups and making it difficult to distinguish the policies of the two main parties.
Thus, the second post-National Front president was also a Liberal who had the backing of his predecessor.
