Currently, Thunder Basin National Grassland is a mosaic of federal, state, and private properties with large tracts of public lands remaining in a roadless and undeveloped state.
Rather than having many national grasslands revising in a vacuum, the Forest Service has chosen a new ecosystem approach, forming a collaborative association of the 11 grassland districts involved in the plan revision.
The need for swift action on the study of the ecosystem is underscored by the changing conditions of the grasslands, including confirmation of sylvatic plague among prairie dog colonies in the area, the association said.

Mislabeled as the Rita Blanca National Grassland on their New Mexico map, in fact this is the Kiowa and it's only when you cross the state lines into Oklahoma or Texas that it becomes the Rita Blanca.
By the way, there is a western unit of the Kiowa National Grassland some 75 miles further west, but we didn't make it that far on this journey.

North Dakota's Little Missouri National Grassland is under siege by oil-and-gas developers, and although only 5.3 million of the original 17 million acres of wetlands remain, the state's prairie-pothole region is still being drained for conversion to cropland.
Within the ecoregion's boundaries are 16 national grasslands and five national parks, but no federally protected native tallgrass prairie.

Like all the Grasslands in North America, this is an area which probably should have never seen the plow; it is the land immortalized by the Dust Bowl of the 1930's, when weeklong dingy clouds filled with grit rose nearly 30,000 feet high.
Several days later, in the Roosevelt National Forest, the tent was lambasted by a fierce mountain wind bursting with snow and sleet.
And yet of all the Grasslands I've visited, this is the one most teeming with life.
