ARECIBO, P.R. -- The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded nearly $600,000 to Arecibo Observatory and the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo to establish a three-year program to provide Hispanic students on the island with experience in conducting scientific research.
NAIC, a national research center, is operated by Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., under a cooperative agreement with the NSF.
The program is aimed at helping address the national need to increase the number of Hispanics making careers in the geosciences, including earth, atmospheric and ocean sciences, says Robert Brown, director of the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center (NAIC), which manages the observatory, the world's largest and most sensitive single-dish radio telescope.

Five students from Spring and three from Westfield have been named “Scholars” in the National Hispanic Recognition Program that honors the highest achieving two percent of all Hispanic students taking the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
The Westfield Mustangs Girls Basketball Team, coached by Susan Smith, and the Westfield Mustangs Boys Basketball Team, coached by Larry Brown, won their respective District 15-5A championship to advance into the University Interscholastic League state play-offs.
Two students from Spring and three from Westfield have been named “Semifinalists” in the National Merit Scholarship competition on the basis of their scores on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

 Programs: Student Recruitment - UF Alumni Association
This program generally targets National Merit Scholars, National Achievement Scholars and National Hispanic Scholars, but other students benefit as well from the information disseminated through the Association's efforts.
The efforts of these volunteers, coordinated by staff support from the Admissions Office and the Alumni Association, has resulted in the University of Florida being consistently ranked in the top 5 public universities in the Nation for the number of National Merit Scholars in the freshman class each Fall.
Receptions are also held in targeted priority areas each year for outstanding high school juniors who scored in the top 5% on the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Examination given each October.
