Research conducted by the NIH's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) shows that the "sight" region of the brain is essentially reorganized in blind individuals to help them process spoken words more effectively.

Alternative research resources: The Senate, as with all other Institutes, directs the NEI to participate in the multi-institute initiative to expand support for the National Disease Research Exchange which is dedicated to providing human tissues and organs to the research community.
Underserved populations: The Senate is particularly pleased by studies on the eye care problems of minority populations in the United States that will help provide the basis for directing manpower and resources appropriately toward the major eye health needs in traditionally underserved populations.
