The National Liberal Party also supports the neutrality of the state in moral and religious issues, as well as the privatisation and denationalisation of the economy, a trend which is currently taking place quite rapidly in Romania, as in other post-communist economies.
However, it is the largest member of the governing Justice and Truth alliance, which enjoys a parliamentary majority due to an alliance between the Liberal Party and the Democratic Party, the Conservative Party and the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania.
Most of the current ministers in government are members of the National Liberal Party, including the current prime-minister, Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu, who is also the party leader.

The National Union, an alliance between the Social Democratic Party and the Humanist Party of Romania, gained the most seats in legislative elections held in November 2004; while the center-right opposition candidate narrowly defeated PSD president and Prime Minister Adrian Nastase for the presidency.
Relations with the large ethnic-Hungarian population have improved despite the rather dramatic gains made by the ultra-nationalist Party of Great Romania (PRM) in recent elections; the PRM is the second largest party in the legislature and its presidential candidate, Corneliu Tudor, forced a runoff election against Iliescu in 2000.
Liberal parties have felt compelled to support the minority government of the PDSR in order to block an alliance between it and the PRM.

The preliminary results of Romania's June local elections were consistent with the findings of an IRI-commissioned March 2004 national survey which showed that two- thirds of Romanians thought a major change in government was needed, yet only 42% felt there was indeed a viable alternative to the current governing party.
Following the democratic coalition's victory in the November 1996 national elections, IRI initiated a program of cooperation with Romanian state institutions to enhance government communications with the public, to improve management of individual ministries, and to strengthen Parliament's role in the policy-making process.
In year one of the program, IRI established a network of civil society and local party participants in Arad, Sibiu, and Bihor counties.

In June 1943 the National Peasants, National Liberals, Communists, and Social Democrats, responding to a Communist Party proposal, formed the Blocul National Democrat (National Democratic Bloc--BND), whose aim was to extricate Romania from the Nazi war effort.
Romania suffered three radical dismemberments in the first year of the war that tore away some 100,000 square kilometers of territory and 4 million people.
The key political forces were: Maniu's National Peasants, who enjoyed strong support in the villages and had the backing of democratic members of the middle class, rightists, nationalists, and intellectuals; the Social Democrats, who were backed by workers and leftist intellectuals; and the Communists, who had reemerged after two decades underground.

Ruling Social Democratic Party Deputy Chairman Viorel Hrebenciuc during a 27 May press conference characterized National Liberal Party (PNL) Chairman Theodor Stolojan as a "Hitlerite" for claiming that the PSD does not have the political will to combat corruption, Mediafax reported.
