The National Library of India at Kolkata is the largest library in India and India's library of public record.
After the independence the Government of India changed the name of the Imperial Library as the National Library, and the collection was shifted from the Esplanade to the present Belvedere Estate.
The library is situated on the scenic 30 acre (120,000 m²) Belvedere Estate, in Kolkata, formerly Calcutta City.The largest library in India and its collection is in excess of one million books.

It was Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy who helped in converting the Calcutta Public Library into a truly national institution by merging it with the remnants of the East India College Library and departmental libraries to give it a form of the Imperial Library and opened it to the public on January 30, 1903.
It was then that the Impereal Library was converted into a National Library by the Government of India.
At the end of the row one finds oneself in front of the main building of the National Library of India at Belvedere, Kolkata.

HE National Library of India, the apex library of 65,000 libraries (public and private in India), is observing its centenary year from January 30, 2003, to January next.
But, according to library scholars, as on date, it has not even succeeded in 20 per cent of the task as India’s National Library, and is unable to cope up with demands of modern times.
Today, the National Library housing more than two million books in all main languages of India and English (three fourths in English) and thousands of periodicals has a carpet area of 345 thousand square feet (including the annexes).
