One of the main goals of a national library is fulfilling their nation's part of the common international goal of universal bibliographic control, by ensuring the bibliographic control of all the books or book-like documents published in that particular country or talking about that particular country, in any way.
Some states which are not independent, but who wish to preserve their particular culture, have established a national library, with all the attributes of such institutions, such as legal deposit.

 Endeavor Announces Voyager Enhancements, Library Integrations
The official launch of Voyager at the National Library of Scotland and the University of Edinburgh included the Scottish Parliament’s Deputy Minister for Culture and Sport, the principal of the University of Edinburgh, the librarians of both the National Library of Scotland and the Edinburgh University Library, and Endeavor’s Jane Burke.

 The Scotsman - Scotland - National Library pursues £40m literature collection
A "ONCE in several lifetimes" opportunity to acquire one of the most outstanding literary archives in the world is being pursued by the National Library of Scotland.
Confirming negotiations were taking place, Martyn Wade, a librarian, said the National Library was exploring ways to bring the entire collection to Scotland from London.
It is understood that the present John Murray favours the establishment of the collection in Scotland and may set up a charitable trust to conserve, catalogue and maintain public access to the material.

The National Library of Scotland is warning that a whole chapter in the country's history will be lost unless a 92-year-old law is changed.
The National Library of Scotland and the other five legal deposit institutions are now calling for the law to be changed, in line with other European countries like France, Germany, Norway and Denmark.

Library officials are now proposing an extension in the nearby Cowgate area and the purchase of the Baden Powell House, another council office building, for use as an education center to host school and family- and local-history groups.

Gathelus sent the stone to Eire when he had invaded that country, and it was later brought to Scotland where it remained in the Abbey of Scone until, in the year 1296, Edward I of England carried it off to Westminster Abbey in England.

Located on George IV Bridge in Edinburgh is the main building of the National Library of Scotland, Scotland's only copyright deposit library, which means that a copy of every book published in Britain must be lodged there.
The National Library was founded in 1925 and is run by a Board of Trustees on behalf of the nation.
Other important holdings are an 11th Century Jerome manuscript Bible, a 15th Century Gutenberg Bible, one of the first examples of printed text, and numerous documents including letters by Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-87), one of the copies of the National Covenant (1638) and the order which brought about the Massacre of Glencoe (1692).
