Some states which are not independent, but who wish to preserve their particular culture, have established a national library, with all the attributes of such institutions, such as legal deposit.

Works may be read on the premises only, although the library maintains a collection of works relating to Wales that is available for inter-library loan.
Founded in 1907, and a legal deposit library since 1911, the Library holds a copy of almost every printed work published in Britain and Ireland since 1912, and has a good collection of earlier works, and works from other countries, acquired over the years through purchase and donation.

From August onwards, the National Library of Wales at Aberystwyth or their on-line shop will be the exclusive sellers of unique commissioned work by two of Wales's most exciting new artists - the potter Lowri Davies of Aberystwyth and the jeweler, Mari Thomas of Llanelli.
As part of an on-going campaign to promote Welsh art, the Library asked both Lowri and Mari to create work inspired by the work of or collections of the National Library.
