For the 15,000 Finalists, there will be about 8,200 merit awards: about 2,500 finalists receive a $2,500 National Merit Scholarship from the NMSC for use at a college or university in the United States; these winners are awarded on a state-by-state basis.
To achieve National Merit Scholar recognition, the NMSC uses many detailed criteria which are outside the margin of test scores.
Required scores for participation in the National Achievement Scholarship Program are also selected on a state by state basis.

I have a son in Cal. who is a national merit semi-finalist.
Then about 8,000 win National Merit Scholar; half of these are sponsored by universities or corporations, the other half by the National Merit Corporation itself.
I thought the National Merit materials said that you could only receive the $2500 award OR a college award OR a corporate award.
