Shield of Dreams: Why National Missile Defense Won't Work
The strenuous objections to national missile defense by both our friends and potential enemies, which may delay the programs, and severe technical problems, leave time for genuine debate of a strategic system which, if deployed, will leave this country and the world considerably less secure than it was before.
Technical evaluation of the testing of national missile defense was complicated by the fact that testing often was conducted in situations considerably simpler than would be presented in reality.
Consideration of national missile defense requires that it be seen as one, not the only means, of dealing with any apparent missile threat, and that its cost be considered competitive with other options.

International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War
Even though missile defense tests have failed spectacularly, the critical question is not whether a missile defense might someday be technically feasible but whether deployment would increase or decrease the risk of nuclear war.
Missile defense or not, people everywhere will remain profoundly vulnerable as long as there are nuclear weapons in the world.
Second, deployment of a missile defense could unravel decades of painstaking efforts to restrain the nuclear arms race through a web of treaties, and it could do so at a time when building on that progress is eminently possible.

Paul Martin Time: Does Martin Know What National Missile Defense Is?
Paul Martin has said (and many Liberals agree) that when he is Prime Minister, Canada will join the US plan for "National Missile Defense".
Effective ballistic missile defenses will be the central element in the exercise of American power and the projection of U.S. military forces abroad.
Ultimately, the real rationale for missile defense is to protect U.S. forces so they can engage in military intervention throughout the world to enforce a Pax Americana—a strategy of empire by another name.
