Museum officials hope that given their limited funding, the government will provide assistance financially to allow the institution to survive the aftermath of the fire.
The museum's director, Chen Yi-yi, said construction had proceeded according to a pre-arranged schedule, and that "there was absolutely no sloppy work in order to make the deadline." Officials at the museum and the Ministry of Education, its supervisory department, are launching investigations and mapping out contingency measures -- including plans for compensation.
The museum is also in charge of the 18 hectares that make up the Pyuma Tribe Cultural Park.

Displeased with the agreement reached between the ministry, the NTU and the National Museum of Prehistory yesterday morning, protesters then proceeded to the university to vent their anger by throwing betel nuts at its front gate, which was being blocked by security guards.
While the NTU had originally planned to return all the artifacts and remains to the museum in four shipments by 2008, all sides agreed that they should be returned in three shipments by the end of next year.
The museum, completed in 2002 in Taitung, was established to house and display the artifacts and remains excavated from the site in 1980 when the Southern Cross-Island Highway was being built.

In speaking about Taiwan's tourism drive, Hsu said the slogan "Naruwan, Welcome to Taiwan" should be easy to remember, and the central government has targeted the international tourism market with a host of special programs and events for 2004 "Visit Taiwan Year." Chief among these is the "Austronesian Culture Festival in Taitung 2004," he added.
With the goal of boosting tourism and attracting more visitors to Taiwan, organizers of the annual "Austronesian Culture Festival in Taitung" said the spotlight is on traditional aboriginal celebration events in the East Coast area this year, as well as on two new sports contests in paragliding and canoeing.
Tourism officials said that through the combined efforts of the central government and the Taitung County local government, past problems have been addressed and they are confident of attracting a record number of both local and foreign patrons to the festival this year.

Prof Peter Bellwood was in the Taiwan News regarding the above-mentioned lecture at the Taiwanese National Museum of Prehistory on the migration of Austronesian-speaking people across the Asia-Pacific region from Taiwan to Pacific Rim areas.
This concept of a 'living museum' that values all aspects of both tangible and intangible heritage resources and creativity of the stakeholder community groups is quite different from the conventional edifice and collection driven idea of a museum.

The Shihsanhang Museum of Archaeology was the result of the first social movement in Taiwan aimed at rescuing cultural assets when the Bali sewage treatment plant was about to be built on top of the site in 1989, recalled Tsang Cheng-hwa, an archaeologist instrumental in establishing the museum.
Archaeological discoveries made during the salvage efforts have recently identified the area as one of the most culturally important in China, local museums have been greatly enriched, and Chinese archaeology has advanced both technically and financially.

News Article - ATAYAL - The worldwide voice of the aboriginal tribes of Taiwan
The government of Taitung County, together with the National Museum of Prehistory, jointly sponsored the recent Festival of Austronesian Cultures.
Much of the evidence that led Taiwan linguists to the conclusion that Taitung is the birthplace of this expansive language group can be seen on display at the prehistory museum.
Although the festival raised complicated questions about the appropriateness of the use of Taiwan's aboriginal peoples to boost Taiwan's international profile and increase tourism, the event was a good indication of the newfound importance Taipei places on the island's aboriginal tribes.

Professor Peter Bellwood, director of the School of Archaeology and Anthropology at Australian National University, said archaeological evidence proved that ancestors of today's Austronesian-speaking people, numbering about 300 million, migrated from Taiwan to Pacific Rim areas.
The discovery was made in the past week during a surveying mission in the east African country in preparation for the return of the final piece of the 1 700-year-old Axum obelisk from Italy, the agency said.
