National Historic Landmarks, or NHL (not to be confused with the Hockey League), are buildings, districts, sites, structures, and objects almost always within the United States or its insular areas and designated by the United States Secretary of the Interior because they are:

 36 CFR PART 62
National Natural Landmark is an area designated by the Secretary of the Interior as being of national significance to the United States because it is an outstanding example(s) of major biological and geological features found within the boundaries of the United States or its Territories or on the Outer Continental Shelf.
Potential national natural landmarks are evaluated on a natural region basis; i.e., similar areas that represent a particular type of feature located in the same natural region are compared to identify examples that are most illustrative and have the most intact, undisturbed integrity.
However, Federal agencies consider the unique properties of designated national natural landmarks and of areas that meet the criteria for national significance in their planning and impact analysis (see §62.6(f)), and there may be State or local planning or land use implications.

The pinnacles of the National Natural Landmark are similar to those at Pinnacles National Monument, an otherwise unconnected site set in wooded land near Salinas on California's Pacific Coast.
Location: The pinnacles are recognized as a National Natural Landmark and are reached by CA 178, a connecting road between US 395 and CA 190, which leads into Death Valley 40 miles after Trona.
The turn off to the NNL is a few miles south, along a signposted dirt/gravel track that is rather severely graded in places but otherwise ok. The road leaves CA 178 to the south, crosses a railway line then follows it for 4 miles to the edge of the formations.

The goal of S.3105 is "to provide for a highest degree of protection and preservation of the Nation's heritage of natural and historic places" which include "units of the National Park System, national historic and natural landmarks, and sites on the National Register of Historic Places".
The Natural Landmark Program, unlike the parallel Historic Landmark Program, has no enabling legislation authorizing the program, even though the Park Service cites the Historic Sites Act of 1935 "to preserve for public use historic sites, buildings and objects of national significance".
After all, the NNL Program was started because, as Ronald Foresta lamented in America's National Parks and Their Keepers (1984), "too much of the nation's land had passed into private ownership", and even in the early 1960's they knew that the cost of direct acquisition was too much.
