Amazon.com: Books: Lonely Planet Vietnam (5th ed)
Vietnam, of course, is a country with a lot of history, not in the least of recent times and to really enjoy your trips you have to read one or two books on the subject.
Also, the LP tends to whitewash the more unpleasant aspects of Vietnam, such as being harassed by people on the street, who are more than eager to rip you off, and the grueling poverty.
In defense of LP, who have produced decent guidebooks in the past, Vietnam may be changing at such a fast pace that as soon as it was published much of the information was already out of date.

The art that comes out of Vietnam is authentic; it has historical momentum; there is a history being made in the painting while it is being painted.
My paintings, drawings, and prints after I returned from Vietnam oiled the gears of my deep engagement in art, heightened and liberated my convictions about the war, and what art could be and needs to be.

Low Intensity Conflict Intelligence: Lessons From Vietnam
The national intelligence structure has to correctly define the problem and understand the threat in order to provide the national policymaker with information that supports decisions to use the tools of national power (political, economic, sociological, psychological, and military).
An effective civil affairs campaign requires intelligence concerning the civilian population in order to identify hostile, uncommitted and friendly elements, motivation and loyalties of population segments, and the size of the civil population engaged in guerilla support activities.
The U.S. misperception of the strategic threat in Vietnam led to unsuccessful actions in the conduct of the war.

For all his flight-suit swagger, Bush, to avoid Vietnam, used his family's political influence to cut line and get into the Air National Guard when others were being denied and then, in the later years of his service, either did or didn't go AWOL -- the record is unclear -- but pretty plainly dogged it.
He managed to get into the cushy confines of the Texas Air National Guard at the height of the Vietnam War in 1968 - a year in which more than a half-million American troops were in the war zone and more than 14,000 were killed.
According to AP, "Under Texas law, a copy of military personnel files of those serving in the Texas Air National Guard must be retained on microfilm at the Texas archives." The Texas Air National Guard has told AP that the files in the Texas state archive are under control of the federal government.
