History of the Scottish National Party - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The party was founded in 1934 as the result of a merger between the National Party of Scotland (NPS) and the Scottish Party.
There was also another internal grouping formed within the party, primarily as a response to the growth of the 79 Group entitled the Campaign for Nationalism in Scotland, with the support of traditionalists such as Winnie Ewing.
This became the party's initial position on the constitutional status of Scotland as a result of a compromise between the NPS, who did support independence, and the Scottish Party who were devolutionists.

National Party of Scotland - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The National Party of Scotland (NPS) was formed in 1928 after John MacCormick of the Glasgow University Scottish Nationalist Association (GUSNA) called a meeting of all those favouring the establishment of a party favouring Scottish independence.
This small party did not last long and had a small membership and was formed by expelled members of the SNP who had been involved with the 55 Group.
Increasingly the two parties began to co-operate, and when the Scottish Party chose to contest the Kilmarnock by-election in November 1933 the NPS endorsed their candidate.

Chapter 5 - The Scottish National Party in the Nineteen Thirties
It was, therefore, with some consternation that leading members of the National Party of Scotland viewed the intervention of the Scottish Party, in the form of Andrew Dewar Gibb as their candidate, in a by-election in Kilmarnock late in 1933.
His position as secretary of the National Party of Scotland enabled him to forge understandings and contacts with the more right wing and gradualist organisation, the Scottish Party, which was headed by such dignitaries as the Duke of Montrose, Sir Alexander MacEwan and Andrew Dewar Gibb.
Some of the former members of the Scottish Party departed the scene but, whilst this helped a little in producing some semblance of cohesion, the fundamental problem of claril~4ng whether the SNP was a "movement" or a political party, with a programme of action which would gain the independence of Scotland, remained unresolved.
