CNEWS Canada - Quebecers mark Victoria Day by honouring 1837 rebellion against British
He said the holiday honours the patriotes who fought 160 years ago for the "civic, political and democratic emancipation of our nation."
Most Quebecers, like those in English Canada, appeared more interest in taking advantage of the first warm, sunny day of the year to plant flowers and enjoy the arrival of summer.
But Jean Dorion, president of the sovereigntist Societe St-Jean-Baptiste of Montreal, called the holiday a great day, even if it will take some people as much time to get used to it as did the metric system.

 Monday, June 20, 1994 -- PRIVATE MEMBERS' BUSINESS (089)
If the national liberation movement started by the Patriotes and inherited by the present sovereignty movement has not yet come to its logical conclusion, the same cannot be said of our civil and political rights and of our democratic and representative institutions.
The Patriotes and the Reformers, before some of them decided that peaceful means would not be adequate to the task, were what we would call today model citizens who were involved in community life; they worked toward establishing a government that was responsible for its acts, and promoted self-determination and representative elections.
However it would be a mistake to set aside a specific day devoted to the memory of particular people who have made contributions, particularly ones whose legacies are controversial.
