The National Provincial Championship (which for sponsorship reasons, is referred to as Air New Zealand NPC or just simply NPC) is New Zealand's principal domestic rugby union competition.
Rugby teams from 27 provincial unions compete in three divisions, 10 in Division One, 9 in Division Two, and 8 in Division Three.
The winner of each final is then declared winner of the championship.

Sports league - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A league championship may be contested in a number of ways.
A league may be split into smaller groups, often called conferences or divisions; teams then compete to be the best in their division and/or conference while also trying to be the best in the league.
Each team may play every other team a certain number of times--usually, teams play an even number of games or matches at their own stadium and on the road, because home field advantage is a major factor in many sports.

Economic Papers (Economic Society of Australia): Uncertainty of outcome, player quality and attendance at National Provincial Championship rugby union matches: an evaluation in light of the competitions review
This competition was initiated after the 1995 Rugby Union World Cup and is a cross-national provincial annual tournament between twelve teams, three from Australia, four from South Africa, and five from New Zealand (Owen and Weatherston, 2004a).
Championship uncertainty is concerned with longer-term uncertainty involving the absence of long-run domination by one or a small number of teams.
Five of the provincial unions fielding teams in the First Division (Auckland, Canterbury, Otago, Waikato, and Wellington) are based in the five main population centres of New Zealand (Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, and Wellington respectively).

Since the introduction of the National Provincial Championship in 1976, all home games a Shield-holder plays in the NPC are automatically challenge matches.
In 1901, the Governor of New Zealand, the Earl of Ranfurly, announced that he would present a cup to the New Zealand Rugby Football Union, to be used as the prize in a competition of their choosing.

 Definition of All Blacks
The first New Zealand national rugby league team was nicknamed the All Golds by the New Zealand press, a derogatory pun based on the fact that rugby league players were professional.
For much of the 20th century, rugby union appeared to be New Zealand's national religion, with selection to the All Blacks perhaps more highly regarded than a knighthood.
The All Blacks are the national rugby union representative team of New Zealand.

However, it could not be determined which of the two teams winning the respective category of the National Hockey Championship would get the national hockey champion trophy.

He has also played for the Auckland Blues Super 12 franchise since the inception of the competition in 1996, and has played extensively for the Auckland National Provincial Championship (NPC) side.
He has generally specialised in the position of fly-half, though he has also played full back at national and international levels.
However, following an exceptional season for the Blues in Super 12, Spencer became first-choice flyhalf for the All Blacks from 2003, and was a part of the squad for the Rugby World Cup that year.

 Provinces of New Zealand
They are also not to be confused with the use of the term in rugby's National Provincial Championship (NPC).
It is important to note that the provincial districts have different boundaries from the present day regions, for example, the Manawatu-Wanganui region is in the Wellington provincial district.
Their only visible function today is their use to determine, with the exception of the Chatham Islands, Northland, and South Canterbury, the geographical boundaries for anniversary day public holidays.

 Sport regions (New Zealand)
Part of the communtiy association with the old provincial areas and names is very evident in sport and in particular with rugby union football which is the major and best organised NZ sport.
Not only does it use the name association but the term "provinces" is widely used to describe the individual unions which comprise the national body of the NZ Rugby Union.
I can'tremember offhand what colours CD cricket uses, but you get the idea - sports teams from one region will all tend to share the traditional "provincial colours".

But if three Aussie teams could get into NZ's National Provincial Championship, Burke said it could only help the Wallabies in the long run.
Burke told AAP the lack of a national championship in Australia made it hard for some players to make the step up from club level to Super 12 and ultimately to the Wallabies.
Out-going Queensland chief executive Jeff Miller has previously endorsed a 12-team national competition - including teams from Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne - to kick off in 2004 or 2005 to fill the gap between Super 12 and Australian club rugby.

The eligibility of players to represent the senior representative teams of Unions playing in the National Provincial Championship Competition and the Ranfurly Shield is governed by the NZRU’s Regulations For Eligibility For Selection To Affiliated Union Senior Representative Teams For The National Provincial Championship And Ranfurly Shield (“the Regulations”).
The only additional events requiring mention are that on 11 August the BOPRFU notified the NZRU of its NPC squad which included Bourke and that on 28 July the HBRFU sent a fax message to the BOPRFU attaching Bourke’s Rugby Academy contract and 2003 NPC contract “in an attempt to have the matter speedily resolved”.
It is not without significance, I think, that the Chief Executive Officer of the HBRFU has not claimed in his submissions to me that he was in any doubt that was one of the issues raised by the letter of 15 July.

Lomu played 40 minutes against Taranaki in a National Provincial Championship warmup match but touched the ball only three times and made just one tackle as his side lost 27-17.
Lomu was the outstanding player at the 1995 World Cup in South Africa where the All Blacks lost in the final to the host nation.
The big winger, who has been sidelined with a recurrence of the kidney complaint, nephrotic syndrome, which requires three days of dialysis a week, still hopes to play in the World Cup which begins on October 10.

Since their initial broadcast on February 18, 1995, the Championship Rugby crew has brought hundreds of games to the new fan and old veteran player alike, and it has been a slowly transforming program that incorporates a careful blend of education for the first timer and keen analysis for the rugby purist.
