The International Appalachian Trail celebrated its 10-year anniversary this month as people from Canada and the United States gathered for a weekend in Nictau, New Brunswick, to mark the milestone.
In plenty of time for the year 2000 A.T. thru-hiking season, the seventh edition of the “Appalachian Trail Thru-hiker’s Companion” is available for purchase through the Appalachian Trail Conference in Harpers Ferry, as well as at outfitter shops and selected book stores around the country.

The North Country National Scenic Trail follows the Buckeye Trail through most of its route in Ohio.
The Buckeye Trail predates both of these national trails by over 20 years.
A single blaze marks the trail where the route is fairly straight or obvious, while a double blaze marks a turn with the upper blaze offset to indicate the new direction.

It is declared to be the policy of the state of Connecticut that the Connecticut portion of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail be preserved in its natural character as proposed by Public Law 90-543, October 2, 1968.
No person who has granted a right-of-way for said trail across his land, or his successor in title, shall be liable to any user of the trail for injuries suffered on said right-of-way unless the injuries are caused by his wilful or wanton misconduct as covered in the provisions of sections 52-557f to 52-557i, inclusive.
Nothing in this section shall be construed to limit the right of the public to pass over existing public roads which are or may become part of the trail, nor prevent the department from performing such work as is necessary for the purpose of forest fire protection, insect, pest and disease control.
