Nationalism was now rediscovered, in country after country, and including advanced capitalist countries, as a potential ally for the workers movement and the left.
Canada, they argued, had developed as a hewer of wood and drawer of water for the British empire, and was now playing this role for the American empire.
The left in Canada should be sympathetic to and in solidarity with the sovereignty demands of Quebec and Aboriginal peoples, and intolerant of and in opposition to the soi-disant sovereignty claims of English Canada.

National Post reporter Robert Benzie said that Harris's "address appeared to be a veiled attack on Ernie Eves," and "sounded like a tacit endorsement of Jim Flaherty." The Globe and Mail 's Graeme Smith agreed: "By accusing his current and former colleagues of losing faith with the party's conservative agenda, Mr.
He is unapologetically pro-life, and since he is the only pro-life candidate in the race has attracted some support on this score; since he has made no significant promises on the issue, however, he also has not been attacked by the pro-choicers.
For the most part, the five candidates seeking to replace Harris are rejecting his successful strategy in the last two elections and staking out positions closer to the political center.

Your prediction of 4-5000 is more accurate for these candidates, possibly even a bit optimistic but if they were to get this this would see each of these getting in the region of 1,000 each, this would win you a seat on the council.
There is a limited amount Socialists can do in any council or parliament, but if enough genuine Socialists are elected, we can stop the rot and reverse some of the damage done by the right wing and the hypocrites.
As for Perry and Mooney and O'Neill they are trying strenously to come in on the coat tails of the first SF candidates in their areas but will each be lucky to break 4/500 and none will be elected.

The national and BC leaderships of the CCF held such a powerful anti-communist animus that the party ran provincial candidates in the Crowsnest Pass in the 1940s and early 1950s in a conscious attempt to split the Left vote and defeat the communist-supported candidates.
By a vote of 23-4, the National Council affirmed the CCF's position of "refusing to affiliate in any way with the Communist Party of Canada.." Three of the four dissenters were Alberta delegates, including Alberta party secretary and organizer William Irvine.

Democratic Underground Forums - Jack Layton elected leader of Canada's New Democratic Party
The winner-take-all national elections that took place in Canada yesterday (June 2, 1997) were clearly unfair -- with the Liberals turning 38.5% of the popular vote into 51.5% of seats and the Conservatives seeing their 19.1% of the national vote translate into a paltry 6.6% of seats.
This time, Jack had the support of Svend, representing the left (although not the farthest left of the party; the Socialist Caucus ran its own candidate), and also had the support of Ed Broadbent, the leader in the 1980s, identified with the righter wing of the party, but much loved by the Canadian public.
This is all different from the US process for selecting parties' candidates, where voters register as one party or another.

A couple of months ago, columnist Doug Patton penned an article titled, “If You Like Canada, You’ll Love Howard Dean.” His point was that the far left Democratic Presidential candidate’s collectivist leanings on issues such as healthcare and taxes bear a strong resemblance to the near-socialist government setup in nearby Canada.
