 Northern Illinois University will host First International Conference on Lao Studies
DeKalb, Ill.— The Center for Southeast Asian Studies at Northern Illinois University is preparing to host the first-ever International Conference on Lao Studies, a three-day event that will coincide with a night of cultural performances in northwest suburban Elgin, home to one of the state's largest Lao communities.
The high interest in the first International Conference on Lao Studies reflects the growing interest in Lao studies among a new generation of scholars, according to John Hartmann, professor in the NIU Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and one of the conference organizers.
“Laos is a relatively small country in Southeast Asia in terms of population, but it has a fascinating history and rich ethnic diversity,” said Sue Russell, professor of anthropology and director of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies.

 MOBILE WORKSHOP ON LAND USE HISTORY IN MMSEA
The Center for Biodiversity and Indigenous Knowledge in collaboration with the World Agroforestry Centre and the National University of Laos are undertaking a Mobile Workshop on the Land Use History in the Montane Mainland Southeast Asia (MMSEA).
The Montane mainland Southeast Asia (MMSEA), including the uplands of Yunnan of Southwest China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and part of Cambodia, shares the most common cultural and biophysical features, however much they might be ignored or denied by political boundaries.
The aim of the mobile workshop is to provide greater synthesis of MMSEA scientific findings about land use history, new insights of resource governance and local livelihoods, as well as recommendations for sustainable development in the MMSEA region.

Tong Soon is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh (PhD 1998; MA 1995) and the University of Durham, UK [BA (Hons) 1993].
He has conducted fieldwork on Chinese street opera and cultural nationalism in Singapore for his doctoral studies, with the support of the International Dissertation Field Research Fellowship (1997), under the supervision of Bell Yung and René T. Lysloff.
