NEA: National Board Certification of Teachers - National Education Association
National Board Certification, a growing part of the national effort to strengthen standards for the teaching profession, is a voluntary, advanced teaching credential that goes beyond state licensure by creating national standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do.
The National Education Association was among the founding organizations that established the National Board in 1987.
Teachers report spending over 200 hours on the assessment process, during which they internalize NBPTS standards, analyze their own teaching in relation to those standards, and reflect on the impact of their teaching strategies on student learning.

USATODAY.com - National Research Council criticizes high school labs
Teachers, school boards and test writers all have responsibility to make changes, said Wheeler, the teachers association official.
Criticisms of science labs are not new, but teachers say the report, coming with the imprimatur of the National Research Council, could give the matter a boost of urgency.
Also contributing to the problem: teachers who aren't prepared to run labs, state exams that don't measure lab skills, wide disparities in the quality of equipment and a simple lack of consensus over what "laboratory" means in the school environment.

All teachers would be able to deduct up to $400 of these expenses on their federal tax return, recouping a portion of their personal expenditures.

In order to help support teachers once they are in the classroom, the President’s 2002 budget proposed $21 million in the first year to establish a teacher tax deduction to help defray out-of-pocket classroom expenses.

While it is useful for teachers to be familiar with analogical terms and theory, such in-depth knowledge is not a prerequisite for their science students to gain more autonomy in analogical thinking.
This goal requires that the voices of students and teachers participate in the negotiation.
To become a teacher who is well prepared to act as a guide for each analogical activity, a teacher may read the notes included with each generic activity.
