Taiping Four Gorillas Secretly Flown to South Africa - Protests Needed
Minister Law instead announced that Malaysia had agreed to send the gorillas to "the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa in Pretoria under a bilateral technical co-operation agreement." Law said that the decision had been approved by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) and the CITES Secretariat in Switzerland.
It is therefore very disappointing news that Malaysian authorities have sent these gorillas to South Africa’s national zoo in Pretoria.

They are currently being housed at the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa in Pretoria, which wants to use them as part of a breeding programme.
Despite a lengthy campaign by environmentalists, the animals have now arrived in South Africa, which is not even a gorilla range state.
However, Malaysia’s Science, Technology and Environment Minister seemingly decided that a quicker ‘solution’ to the problem would be sending the gorillas to South Africa – on the basis that South African Airways had been used to carry the gorillas from Lagos via Johannesburg to Bangkok, from where they were forwarded to Malaysia.

Cameroon determined not to let sleeping gorillas lie - World - smh.com.au
Cynics suggest that South Africa's extended pondering - over almost two years - of the gorilla question is aimed at allowing the zoo to complete its gorilla house and claim permanent ownership of what in the zoo world is the Mona Lisa of exhibits.
The four gorillas, stolen as babies and smuggled to Malaysia before being surrendered a year ago, are the prize in a protracted custody battle involving South Africa, Cameroon, Nigeria and many in international wildlife conservation.
The South African Government talked with Cameroon for nine months about their repatriation, until December, when the Environment Ministry said a committee would oversee the animals' return within six months.

I am, however, speaking about The National Zoological Gardens of South Africa, which recently launched an Australia section by taking on two male koala bears.

They were in fact gifts from the government of Australia when South Africa became a democratic country.
