The Flower Garden Banks (often simply the "Flower Gardens") is a U.S. National Marine Sanctuary in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico, located roughly 105 miles (170 km) south of Sabine Pass.

 Flower Garden Banks
The northernmost of the three Flower Garden Banks, the Stetson Bank, lies in slightly cooler waters.
However, the east and west banks, near the water's surface, are just what you might expect from a tropical reef, with hundreds of species of fish, invertabrates and heads of coral the size of automobiles.
Manta rays feed at the edges of the banks all year, southern stingrays lie in the sand flats, and devil rays visit the sanctuary in the early summer.

Geologists also began to study two of the shallower features, which were called the Flower Garden Banks, due to the brightly colored rocks (which were later discovered to be coral) that sometimes snagged fishermen's hooks and boat anchors.
It wasn't until the 1960s that scientists and scuba divers discovered the banks were composed of massive, continuous coral reefs, with large schools of tropical fish, sea turtles, sharks, and large impressive creatures such as manta rays and whale sharks.
