National holiday of Sweden - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The National Day of Sweden is celebrated on June 6 every year.
The events of 1523 and 1809 are generally regarded as the most important; the first establishing Sweden as a country, the other establishing the current system of government.
The day was made into a national day by the Riksdag (Swedish parliament) in 1983, and before that was just known as Day of the Swedish flag.

: In Japan, besides National Foundation Day on February 11, which is a National Day, there is also a National Holiday (国民の休日, kokumin no kyujitsu, which translates to "Citizens' day off") on May 4, between Constitution Day on May 3 and Kodomo no hi ( Children's Day) on May 5.
A national holiday is a statutory holiday enacted by a country to commemorate the country itself.
In cases in which the nation is represented by a subnational government in a larger country, that government may make the holiday statutory.

Because Sweden already has a national day, no matter what the politicians decreed, and I'll be celebrating it on Friday with a bunch of herring, a box of strawberries and a few schnaps.
As an immigrant rapper/poet on a TV program noted last night, Midsommar is the true national day of Sweden, when everybody thanks their good luck for being Swedish and when it rains, as it often does, nobody goes inside but stays outside to celebrate nature and their good fortune in being Swedish.
Outside of the politicians who voted for a national day and the marginal group of Neo-nazis who assemble every year on June 6th to march for white rights, virtually nobody in this country gives a shit when Gustav Vasa became king.

 The 17th of May
The day was no longer regarded as a day of national unity, but a day of strife, when conservatives and liberals voiced their political standpoints in town after town, each with their own 17th of May speakers and their own 17th of May processions.
But after Napoleon was forced to abdicate at the beginning of April, the Crown Prince of Sweden had fulfilled his obligations to his allies and, towards the end of May 1814, he was able to return to Sweden with the Swedish army.
Norway was the reward of the victorious commander in the field, in return for his and Sweden's support to the allies in the final reckoning with Napoleon.

 SWEDEN.SE - 6 June 2005: Sweden’s National Day a public holiday at last
Sweden has not taken part in any of the wars of the modern era, which may explain the Swedes’ somewhat guarded attitude towards the idea of a national day.
The non-socialist parties in the Riksdag were the most eager to introduce a national day, and in 1983 their time came when Flag Day was officially re-named National Day.
Over the years, groups have also lobbied for the introduction of a National Pastry (cheesecake) and for the key-fiddle to be declared the National Instrument.

The Local - Swedes sceptical towards National Day
This year is the first time that National Day will be marked with a public holiday, replacing the holiday for the second day of pentecost.

The Local - Neo-nazis plan National Day march
Sweden colluded with the Nazis during the last war - there are would be Hitlers everywhere, you just have to be aware of who they are and where they are.
Sweden continued to make industrial exports to the Nazi regime throughout the war, profited from gold which the Nazis had re-minted in Sweden, and a number of other dubious activities.
After the war support for the National Union of Fascists was virtually non-existant, and Mosley - after the results of the Holocaust became apparent - tried to distance himself from his anti-Semitic views.
