Editorial: Getting religion / The national motto is a pawn in the culture wars
Although the bill tries to defend its own constitutionality, saying the motto passes court scrutiny if "the purpose of the display is to advance or endorse the national motto rather than a particular religious belief or practice," it is disingenuous to suggest that the proposed law isn't motivated by religion.
Religious zealots should be opposed when their obvious if unstated intent is to deploy the national motto as a battering ram to put another hole in the wall separating church and state, a wall that has been under constant assault in the Bush years, even though religion in America has always prospered in its shadow.
The introduction of the motto bill follows the lead of a national campaign launched by the American Family Association, an ultraconservative group that supports the so-called traditional family values of conservative Christians.

During the interview you contradicted yourself when you said that since the phrase is our National Motto that it would pass the test of being non-offensive to religions, yet in your opinion this is an important time to put God in our schools.

 PUBLIC RELIGIOUS MOTTOS
Religious mottos including the national motto have withstood constitutional scrutiny largely because they are deemed a form of civic piety similar to long-standing federal and state public observances including legislative prayer.
In Allegheny, the U.S. Supreme Court analogized the national motto to the non-sectarian legislative prayer upheld from an originalist perspective in Marsh v.
In the United States, religious mottos appear on public buildings, on coins and currency, and in national and state anthems.

Illinois State Motto State Sovereignty National Union
Like many state mottoes, the Illinois state motto, State Sovereignty - National Union, was not approved as an official state motto, but rather, was adopted as an element of the State Seal.

The Illinois state motto is very much related to the issues surrounding the power of an individual state versus the power of the Union.

God, Coins, the National Motto, and the Pledge of Allegiance
Three very prominent examples of this mindless patriotism are the changes that have been made to our nation's coinage, the national motto, and to the Pledge of Allegiance.
The original motto for the nation, suggested by Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams, was the simple phrase, E Pluribus Unum.
Its purpose was to signify the collection of independent states into a common nation; a diverse collection of people from many different nations, who could work together in spite of their differences.

In asking for a human king, and in hearkening to the false promises of safety and "national security" from the gods of Zidon, Israel rejected God, and thus rejected true safety and security, as their history and eventual captivity proves.
