The prime functions of national parks are the preservation of the natural environment and the conservation of biodiversity, but they are also important recreation areas, providing opportunities to explore and enjoy the natural environment and experience a variety of other activities, depending on the particular park.

National parks in Australia are set aside forever, and for a park or section of a park to be revoked or cancelled, the consent of parliament must be achieved (EPA, 1999a).
Under the National Parks and Wildlife Act of 1974 in Queensland, Australia, “The cardinal principle to be observed in the management of national parks shall be the permanent preservation to the greatest possible extent, of their natural condition” (UNEP & WCMC, 1992).
