The smallest of the country's 13 national parks, it was opened in December 1942, the 300th anniversary of the visit to Tasman Bay of Dutch explorer, Abel Janzoon Tasman, the first European to visit NZ.
This park is situated in the remotest part of New Zealand, much of which is yet to be explored.
This park offers so much variety and I recomend that if you are only able to visit New Zealand for a short period of time then this would be the place to visit.

The scenic highpoints (mostly in the upper reaches) are surrounded by the 74,231 hectares of the Whanganui National Park.
The national park consists of 114,394 hectares of very mountainous terrain (the highest point is Mt. Murchison at 2408m), beech forests, alpine vegetation and kea (alpine parrots).
