 London Gallery Acquires Hughes Portrait
This image, released by the National Portrait Gallery Tuesday Oct. 4, 2005, shows the only surviving portrait of the late poet laureate Ted Hughes by his wife and fellow poet Sylvia Plath, which has been aquired by the gallery on Tuesday.
Tuesday, October 4, 2005; 12:38 PM LONDON -- The National Portrait Gallery in London has bought the only surviving portrait of late poet laureate Ted Hughes by his wife and fellow poet, Sylvia Plath.
The portrait was drawn in the year Hughes began to gain critical recognition for his first collection of poems, "Hawk in the Rain." Hughes recalled that it was drawn in Cambridge where he and Plath lived from October 1956 to May 1957.
