In 1900, Panama was a territory of the Republic of Colombia, which had a democratic regime beset by frequent upheavals.
In 1903, with the aid of the U.S., Panama gained independence from Colombia, and established the Republic of Panama, a presidential democracy modeled after that of the U.S. A nationalist coup d’état in 1931 replaced the American influenced regime with a new democracy, though most of the political institutions remained the same.
The National Police deposed the president in a coup of 1941, and though the state remained nominally democratic, it functioned more like an authoritarian state.
