Beatnuts - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The only Latino members of the Native Tongues Posse, they have had long-standing involvement with the crew's activities.
Early on in their career they produced whole albums for Posse members Common and Chi-Ali.
Their production is noted as some of the finest and most accomplished, if unheralded, in all of hip-hop, often intricately detailed (as in their finely honed work for Mos Def on two tracks from Black on Both Sides) but more regularly barnstorming, club-friendly, flourish-laden party music.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the New York City-based hip-hop collective the Native Tongues posse kicked out some of the most ill, groundbreaking music of the day.
Native Tongues members performed together and promoted & collaboated on each other's work (on songs like ATQ's "Scenario," De La Soul's "Buddy," and Jungle Brothers' "Doin' Our Own Dang") as a way of collectively breaking through to the mainstream.
This playlist includes music from members of the Native Tongues posse.

Dubbed the Native Tongues posse, the crew boasted a remarkable collection of talented artists that included De La, A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, the Jungle Brothers, Black Sheep, Monie Love and Chi Ali, who's currently incarcerated.
In their heyday, most of the members appeared on each other's respective projects, and the Native Tongue's posse cut "Buddy" remains as one of hip-hop's all-time classics.

Though the trio was uncomfortable with the hippie label, there was no denying that the humor and eclecticism presented an alternative to the hardcore rap that dominated hip-hop.
De La Soul quickly were perceived as the leaders of a contingent of New York-based alternative rappers which also included A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, the Jungle Brothers, and Monie Love; all of these artists dubbed themselves the Native Tongues posse.
Though their style initially earned both critical raves and strong sales, De La Soul found it hard to sustain their commercial momentum in the '90s as their alternative rap was sidetracked by the popularity of considerably harder-edged gangsta rap.

The nine tracks were concise and razor sharp in comparison to the bloated epics being released by the rap mainstream, and the EP was immediately hailed as one of the decade's most important hip-hop releases.
The tracks harked back to the old school attitude of New York's Native Tongues Posse, the seminal late 80s coalition of artists including De La Soul, the Jungle Brothers and A Tribe Called Quest who reaffirmed rap's social agenda.
This was evident on the manifesto-defining "Concrete Schoolyard" ("Let's take it back to the concrete streets/Original beats from real live MCs"), which even provided the troupe with a surprise UK Top 40 single when it reached number 35 in November 1998.

Digable Planets did not pioneer the gentle, jazzy approach to hip-hop, but they brought it to the radio, and that was no small task.
Between 1988 and 1990, the members of the Native Tongues posse -- Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, and A Tribe Called Quest -- each released brilliant, genre-altering albums.
Working in contrast to the more thudding, angry or materialistic forms of hip-hop, these groups assembled tracks from jazz samples, Fender Rhodes washes and odd non-musical recordings, they rapped with a gentle attack and playful bounce, and they espoused Afro-centric and nonviolent living.

The main reference points are pretty much the same -- old-school rap, which allows for a sense of playfulness as well as history, and the Native Tongues posse's fascination with jazz, both for its sophistication and cultural heritage.
But they're supported by a rich depth that comes from forays into reggae (as well as its aura of spiritual conscience), pop, soul, funk, and even hardcore punk (that on the album's centerpiece, "Rock n Roll," a dissection of white America's history of appropriating fl musical innovations).

Both groups were part of the New York-based Native Tongues posse, and for a while it looked like they would remake hip hop in their image, releasing one stellar record after the next.
Of course, that didn’t happen; Dr. Dre’s The Chronic became the blueprint for the next ten years of rap, and both groups have been releasing records that, while good, have never quite lived up to their crowning achievements.
And while they’ve earned bragging rights, it seems unnecessarily cruel to follow a shout out to the Jungle Brothers, Latifah, and Quest by rubbing their fellow Native Tongues’ noses in the fact that De La is still making records and they’re not (“The Future.”).

The Harvard Crimson :: Arts :: Aesop Rock, King Poetic?
Hip-hop legends like Wu-Tang Clan, Rakim, Nas and Notorious B.I.G. have been weaving abstract rhymes into their oeuvres for years (albeit less pretentiously), along with left-field heroes like De La Soul, 3rd Bass and the Native Tongues Posse (Q-Tip’s nickname is even “the Abstract”).
Aesop grants that the vast majority of rap these days, regardless of its visceral appeal, is still lyrically a “glorified way of saying ‘bitches ain’t shit.’” Battle raps and posse tracks often serve to pad out “albums” lacking any unified theme, even in the “underground” scene in which he operates.
An inextricable part of Aesop’s appeal is the relative lack of such pseudo-macho posturing in his work; in his own words, he doesn’t want to spend his “15 minutes of fame shitting on someone.”
