Natural Bridge Caverns, the largest known cavern in Texas, was discovered on March 27, 1960, by four spelunkers who were students at St. Mary's University in San Antonio.
Commercial development of the cavern began on March 25, 1962, and it was opened to the public on July 3, 1964.
The cavern is almost 100 percent active and still growing, and the temperature is seventy degrees year-round.

Natural Bridge Caverns, the largest show cave in Texas, was discovered in 1960 by a group of explorers from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio.
The caverns were developed with safety for the visitor and preservation of the cavern as the two foremost goals.

The cavern area lies along the southwestern flank of the San Marcos Arch, which was raised along its northwest-trending axis during the close of the Early Cretaceous (Rose, 1972; Woodruff and Abbott, 1979; Kastning, 1983).
Abbott (1973, 1975, 1977a,b) investigated the hydrogeology of the Edwards Aquifer in the vicinity of New Braunfels and attempted to relate development of caves to the diagenetic evolution of the Edwards Limestone and to the hydrochemistry of the aquifer.
The North Caverns, from the entrance to the Hall of the Mountain Kings, was developed for tourism and opened to the public in 1964 (Heidemann, 1979).

(Sept. 12, 2003)--For the first time in the history of Natural Bridge Caverns (NBC), a skilled team from the UTSA Center for Archaeological Research will perform a series of excavations begining Sept. 15 and spanning four weeks to investigate historical remains at the largest commercial cavern system in Texas.
The excavations are being conducted to demonstrate the importance of the site to the history of the area in conjunction with the nomination of NBC to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
The National Register criteria define, for the nation as a whole, the scope and nature of historic and prehistoric properties that are considered for listing in the NRHP, and are worthy of the protection afforded to them by the designation.
