MIT Institute For Soldier Nanotechnologies - News and Events - Research News - Nature's Lesson in Armor Design
At MIT's Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies, researchers are studying the structure and mechanics of the tough inner layer of mollusc shells, called "nacre" or mother-of-pearl, at extremely small, nanometer-length scales (a nanometer is a billionth of a meter).
Nacre is composed of two relatively weak materials: 95 percent calcium carbonate, a brittle ceramic, and 5 percent flexible biopolymer.
These materials are organized into a "brick-and-mortar" structure with millions of ceramic plates, each a few thousand nanometers in size, that are stacked on top of each other like rolls of coins.

Natural methods of dying fabrics and woods
Natural dyeing materials are mainly plants, with the exception of certain insects and snails, which make reds and greys.
Mordants are materials that cause the natural dyes to bond chemically with the cloth, preventing the color from either fading with exposure to light or washing out.
Natural dyes work best with natural fibers such as cotton, linen, wool, silk, and others such as jute, ramie, and sisal, with wool being by far the easiest to take the dyes, followed by cotton, linen, silk, and then the more coarse fibers such as sisal and jute.

 Fragrance Materials
Even "nature" identical chemicals may not have the same affect because in nature substances are not isolated and the other substances in the material modify its effect.
In the fragrance industry the term "natural" refers to the source of the material and physical extraction means, not to how closely the substance resembles it source in nature.
Natural materials are often cut with synthetics to obtain a more standardized product or to cut costs by extending the more expensive natural materials.

 Natural Gas Standards
There is a preference for the lighter isotope in biological processes, so highly bioprocessed materials, such as hydrocarbon gases associated with a petroleum reserve, are measurably depleted in 13C.
While chemical measurements of natural gas are generally routine, the reliability of compound-specific isotopic measurements has been questionable.
While the availability of the NGS materials was a significant advance, the difficulty in chemical separations and isotopic analysis, as well as differences in data evaluation methods, led to wide dispersion in intercomparison results that prevented the assignment of precise isotopic values.
