Lecture 8: The New Intellectual Order: Man, Nature and Society
Nature was conceived as the handiwork of God, created and ordered according to the account in the Holy Scriptures.
Nature came to be regarded as a complicated and impressive affair.
If nature reveals diversity to be the rule, then the theological effort to teach and enforce uniformity in thought and action must be incorrect and dangerous.

 J.S. Mill, Nature
NATURE, natural, and the group of words derived from them, or allied to them in etymology, have at all times filled a great place in the thoughts and taken a strong hold on the feelings of mankind.
Nature means the sum of all phenomena, together with the causes which produce them; including not only all that happens, but all that is capable of happening; the unused capabilities of causes being as much a part of the idea of Nature, as those which take effect.
Immoral, because the course of natural phenomena being replete with everything which when committed by human beings is most worthy of abhorrence, any one who endeavoured in his actions to imitate the natural course of things would be universally seen and acknowledged to be the wickedest of men.

An analogy is of ripening corn, each kernel swelling until it meets the others, each one having its own positive shape caused by its growth as a cell from the inside.
In poor design, sometimes, in order to give an entity good shape, the background space where it lies has left-over shape, or no shape at all.

Therefore it is not subject to order; and order of nature does not exist in it.
The order of nature means not the ordering of nature itself, but the existence of order in the divine Persons according to natural origin.
Nature in a certain way implies the idea of a principle, but essence does not; and so the order of origin is more correctly called the order of nature than the order of essence.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Order of Preachers
As the Order of the Friars Preachers is the principal part of the entire Order of St. Dominic, we shall include under this title the two other parts of the order: the Dominican Sisters (Second Order) and the Brothers of Penitence of St. Dominic (Third Order).
The order assimilated the ancient forms of the religious life, the monastic and the canonical, but it made them subservient to the clerical and the apostolic life which are its peculiar and essential aims.
The same solicitude to remove the order from the odium of the inquisitorial office impelled the provincial chapter of Cahors (1244) to forbid that anything should accrue to the friars from the administration of the Inquisition, that the order might not be slandered.

OVERVIEW OF THE NATURE OF ORDER
Each can be read by itself, and each sheds light on one facet of the problem of living structure: First the definition, second the process of generating living structure, third the practical vision of a world made of living structure, and fourth, the cosmological underpinnings and implications caused by the idea of living structure.
Starting with an analysis of the arbitrariness of present-day architecture, and going to the root of functional order in the world, he proposes a scientific basis for looking at life as an objective concept that is rooted in structure.
The unfolding of living structure in natural systems is first compared to the unfolding of buildings and town plans in traditional society, and then contrasted with present day processes.

Perhaps allegory is the lens in which nature is really known, as-it-is. I'm inclined to believe that alienation in the modern man leads the viewer to see nature as disordered and higglety-pigglety.

On the Nature of "The Nature of Order"
Order on the smallest scale is established by paired contrasting elements, existing in a balanced visual tension.
In order to ensure that smaller centers work together to form larger ones, smaller centers are often irregular in shape ("syncopated in shape and arrangement") to create a smooth fit of the smaller centers into the larger centers.
As it turns out, the type of process described in The Nature of Order is very much like what members of the so called "gentlemen hacker" culture (which sprang out of MIT in the 60s) used to build their systems.

Powell's Books - Nature of Order Book 1: The Phenomenon of Life by Christopher Alexander
Now, in The Nature of Order, Alexander explores the properties of life itself, highlighting a set of well-defined structures present in all order and in all life from microorganisms and mountain ranges to good houses and vibrant communities.
These properties are seen over and over in nature, and in cities and streets of the past, but have all but disappeared in the deadly developments and buildings of the last one hundred years.
The other three volumes of The Nature of Order continue this thesis with three complementary views giving a masterful prescription for the processes which allow us to generate living structure in the world.

A great deal of the nature and meaning of positive space may be seen in a plan drawing, with reference to fl and white.
And there are sometimes naturally occurring spots of natural beauty, which call a hull of space into being, just because they point to the importance of such a particular spot in the land (or in the town) as a natural center which has importance in people's hearts.
The reason is, that it is the large-scale organization of the space, the actual geometric order of the streets and spaces, which matters most.
