DEPweb: Beyond Economic Growth, Chapter 3
A "natural population increase" occurs when the birth rate is higher than the death rate.
While a country's population growth rate depends on the natural increase and on migration, global population growth is determined exclusively by the natural increase.
Population growth caused by more women giving birth even though each has the same number of or fewer children is called "population momentum." Population momentum is particularly significant in developing countries that had the highest fertility rates 20 to 30 years ago.

Russia, Population, Death Rate, Birth Rate - JRL 7-30-05
A natural population increase was registered in 15 areas of the Russian Federation, including the Northern Caucasus republics of Chechnya, Dagestan, and Ingushetia.
The general decrease in population was partially compensated by the increase of migration mainly in the regions with higher-than-average and average levels of development.
For instance, the increase of migration fully compensated for the natural population decrease in Moscow and even exceeded it by 6.2%.

 The Determinants and Implications
In this paper, age distributions and natural changes in the Russian population are studied for the period of 1959-1993 using statistics of Goskomstat RF (the national statistical agency of the Russian Federation), including single-year age distributions based on the 1959, 1970, 1979, and 1989 censuses.
Thus, the main factor that triggered both post-war decreases in population growth was a sharp decline in natural increase, due to low fertility and the peculiarities of the age structure of the Russian population.
Population age structure ratios, sometimes referred to as dependency or support ratios, are often presented to capture relative changes in the sizes of different age groups.

The declining birthrate is projected to cause the ratio of younger-than-working-age individuals in the population to decrease dramatically from the 1992 figure of 421 per 1,000 in the working-age group to only 241 per 1,000 in 2005.
Between 1959 and 1989, the percentage of retirees in the population and the percentage of Russians eighty or older nearly doubled, although declining life expectancy already was reducing the impact of that trend in the mid-1990s.

 National Population Projections
Despite these large increases in the number of persons in the population, the rate of population growth, referred to as the average annual percent change,1 is projected to decrease during the next six decades by about 50 percent, from 1.10 between 1990 and 1995 to 0.54 between 2040 and 2050.
The decrease in the rate of growth is predominantly due to the aging of the population and, consequently, a dramatic increase in the number of deaths.

The conservation status of a species is an indicator of the likelihood of that endangered species continuing to survive.
Many factors are taken into account when assessing the conservation status of a species: not simply the number remaining, but the overall increase or decrease in the population over time, breeding success rates, known threats, and so on.
