Right - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For instance, the rights of a father to be respected by his son did not indicate a duty upon the father to return that respect, and the divine right of kings to hold absolute power over their subjects did not leave room for many rights to be granted to the subjects themselves.
It is not generally considered necessary that a right should be understood by the holder of that right; thus rights may be recognized on behalf of another, such as children's rights or the rights of people declared mentally incompetent to understand their rights.
Rights can be divided into individual rights, that are held by citizens as individuals (or corporations) recognised by the legal system, and collective rights, held by an ensemble of citizens or a subgroup of citizens who have a certain characteristic in common.

Natural rights - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Natural rights are universal rights that are seen as inherent in the nature of the world, and not contingent on human actions or beliefs.
The theory of natural rights was developed from the theory of natural law during the Enlightenment in opposition to the divine right of kings, and provided a moral justification for liberalism.
Hobbes objected to the attempt to derive rights from "natural law," arguing that law ("lex") and right ("jus") though often confused, signify opposites, with law referring to obligations, while rights refer to the absence of obligations.

 Natural Law and Natural Rights
Natural law is not some far away and long ago golden age myth imagined by Locke three hundred years ago, but a real and potent force in today's world, which still today forcibly constrains the lawless arrogance of government officials, as it did in Dade county very recently.
The opponents of natural rights often complain that the advocates of natural rights are not logically consistent, because we continually shift between inequivalent definitions of natural law.
For thousands of years advocates of natural law would start with what is now the standard rationale for sociobiology, by pointing out how the wolf and the deer each have natures and inclinations appropriate for the kind of life they needed to live and to take proper care of their offspring.

AllRefer.com - natural rights (Political Science: Terms And Concepts) - Encyclopedia
The modern idea of natural rights grew out of the ancient and medieval doctrines of natural law, i.e., the belief that people, as creatures of nature and God, should live their lives and organize their society on the basis of rules and precepts laid down by nature or God.
Locke assumed that humans were by nature rational and good, and that they carried into political society the same rights they had enjoyed in earlier stages of society, foremost among them being freedom of worship, the right to a voice in their own government, and the right of property.
The most important elaboration of the idea of natural rights came in the North American colonies, however, where the writings of Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams, and Thomas Paine made of the natural rights theory a powerful justification for revolution.

 Natural & Human Rights Defined
These were rights which were logically a part of what it must mean to be human (essentially), therefore a right in which all humans must share, by virtue of their humanity alone.
Examples of the concept of "natural right" are Thomas Paine's "Rights of Man" (1792), the French declaration of "Rights of Man and Citizen" (1789) and the French declaration of "Rights of Woman" (1790).
Consider the right of the disabled to be provided with comparable secondary education facilities, or the right of girls to have some reasonable funding for their athletic programs at public universities.

Left2Right: How Not to Complain Against Taxes (II): Against Natural Property Rights
Natural property exists, in the sense that people do successfully establish private property regimes, based on local conventions, that are independent of and often in opposition to the state.
The case for formalizing natural property--incorporating it into the artificial capitalist regime--is rather that in many cases this is the best way, of the available alternatives, to enable the owners to escape poverty, provide for their needs, and gain prosperity and a wider range of opportunities.
Without the natural right preceding positive law we cannot make this statement because the law is just whatever people want and in some poor countries people may want the extra income gained from selling their children into slavery.

Commentary: Migration Rights, Natural Law, and the Free Society   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
The right to migrate springs from three separate principles of Christian social teaching: the right of a family to sustenance, the priority of the family over the state, and the right of economic initiative.
For the same reason that humans have a right to privately owned goods so that families can provide for their needs and development humans have a right to migrate to provide materially both for the family that migrates, and for those to whom the migrant sends remittances.
The right to migrate is a natural right.

Right Reason: Natural rights theory versus contractarianism
The term "natural rights" refers specifically to a theory of government, that is by its very nature contractarian.
You seem to be using "natural rights" in a very restrictive sense, one which may be common among Straussians (who like to draw a rigid distinction between natural law doctrines and natural rights doctrines) but which does not reflect the thinking of other (probably most) scholars.
Of course, a natural rights theory based in natural law thinking, especially Thomistic natural law thinking, is bound to be very different from, say, a purely secular natural rights theory.

In this classic work, Leo Strauss examines the problem of natural right and argues that there is a firm foundation in reality for the distinction between right and wrong in ethics and politics.
The book goes on to trace the origin of natural right, and even philosophy itself, by examining the moment that the first philosopher questioned authority and asked the question "what is good?" by nature, as opposed to "what is good?" by convention.
From the ancients to the moderns, every step in the development of natural right is traced, and the crisis of modern natural right is analyzed in fine detail.

This is in contrast to conservatives who derive their absolute right from one of the Christian traditions, and liberals who tend to believe in cultural relativism - there is no "right" or "wrong" culture or belief (it all depends on ones point of view).
In lieu of clearly outlining a coherent theory of natural rights, the author is most intent on skewering historicists, followers of Max Weber, modern liberals, and others who rely on what men have come to understand about society and thereby fashioned rights.
The biological imperative to survive in nature is hardly a right.

Some of the greatest natural right teachers have argued that, precisely if natural right is rational, its discovery presupposes the cultivation of reason, and therefore natural right will not be known universally: one ought not even to expect any real knowledge of natural right among savages.
The problem of natural right is one of the most controversial and significant issues in contemporary political and social philosophy.
Strauss there reopened the question of natural right, the possibility of a standard of justice independent of and superior to human agreement or convention.

Defending a conception of "Darwinian natural right" based on the claim that the good is the desirable, the author argues that there are at least twenty natural desires that are universal to all human societies because they are based in human biology.
The satisfaction of these natural desires constitutes a universal standard for judging social practice as either fulfilling or frustrating human nature, although prudence is required in judging what is best for particular circumstances.
The author studies the familial bonding of parents and children and the conjugal bonding of men and women as illustrating social behavior that conforms to Darwinian natural right.

Darwinian Natural Right, by Larry Arnhart, argues for a moral system in which we should seek to fulfill our natural desires, which exist due to Darwinian natural selection and evolution.
His argument acts as a statement of nature in that it says that human beings, as part of their existence, seek to fulfill natural desires.
As a product of natural human experience, not only Judaism but all religious beliefs and practices serve the natural desires of human beings in diverse social and physical environments, and consequently we would explain religion as an adaptation of human ecology (Burkert 1996; Reynolds and Tanner 1995).
