According to the hagiography of Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius by Saint Clement of Ohrid, Naum took part in their mission to Great Moravia and in 867 or 868 became a priest in Rome.
Naum was one of the founders of the Pliska Literary School (later Preslav Literary School) where he worked between 886 and 893.

In Ohrid region Christianity was inaugurated as the official religion as early as IV century AD Since the first part of IV century the town of Lychnidos became an episcopal centre.
The solid bonds of Clement and Naum with this region are evident from the fact that both were buried in the Monasteries built by themselves on the shore of Lake Ohrid.
Naum died in 910 and Clement in 916.

As to the life of Naum, Clement's companion and brother in faith, it is most thoroughly, though still scantly, dealt with in his two Slavonic Hagiographies which remained unknown until the end of the last century.
Ohrid was thenceforth a spring of new water, a fast-flowing stream which flowed and unchecked though Macedonia and merged, as a constituent part, into the vast sea of Slavonic and Byzantine culture.

Naum's monastery of the Holy Archangels, together with Clement's monastery of St. Pantheleimon in Ohrid, are the earliest known Slavonic monuments of the ecclesiastic architecture in the region of Ohrid.
It is triconchal (trefoil) in shape and belongs to the style of the medieval Slavonic architecture cherished during the period of the activities of Clement and Naum in the territory of Macedonia.
Archaeological excavations and surveys of Naum's monastery revealed that the present church was built on the foundations of the original church in the period between the XVI and XVII centuries.

At the end of the 9th century and the beginning of the 10th century, due to the activity of Climent and Naum Ohridski, Ohrid was the oldest cultural temple in the world of the Slovenes.
This church, which was originally the synod church of the Ohrid Archbishop, and later converted to a mosque, has preserved in its interior the traces of several time-periods: frescoes from the 11th, 12th, 13th century, which represent some of the most significant achievements in the Byzantine painting of that time.
With the arrival of the Turks in Ohrid, the monastery St. Panthelemon was converted into a mosque, and the relics of St. Kliment were transferred to this church.
