Other than a snail shell, a nautilus shell is chambered inside; the animal itself inhabits only the outermost, apertural chamber.

A nautilus' shell mouth or aperture is protected by a hard and resisting lid, which closes the aperture, when the animal withdraws into the shell.

History   (Site not responding. Last check: )
In their overall appearance and dimensions, USS V-5 (later Narwhal, SS-167) and USS V-6 (later Nautilus, SS-168) were similar to Argonaut and constituted “submarine cruiser” counterparts at least partially inspired by German success with long-range submarine commerce raiders in World War One.
Narwhal and Nautilus served usefully in the 1930s, and just before World War Two, Nautilus was modified to carry 20,000 gallons of aviation gasoline for refueling seaplanes at sea.
Thus, Nautilus joined with Argonaut in transporting Carlson’s Raiders to Makin, and then with Narwhal, landed a strong detachment of U.S. Army Scouts on Attu in the Aleutians preparatory to the main landing that regained that island from the Japanese in May 1943.

 USS Argonaut
Two submarines of the United States Navy have borne the name USS Argonaut, after a relative of the octopus -- sometimes called the paper nautilus -- which propels itself underwater by expelling a jet of water.

Admiral Chester Nimitz assigned Argonaut and Nautilus (SS-168) to transport and land marine commandos on Makin in the Gilbert Islands.
