United States Naval Academy, public, coeducational institution of higher learning in Annapolis, Maryland; it trains students to be commissioned officers in the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps.
The academy was founded as the Naval School in 1845 by then secretary of the navy George Bancroft.
All appointees to the academy must be U.S. citizens (except for authorized appointees from foreign countries), of good moral character, in good physical condition, unmarried, and between the ages of 17 and 22.

Upon graduation, most Naval Academy Midshipmen are commissioned as Ensigns in the U.S. Navy or Second Lieutenants in the Marine Corps and must serve a minimum of five years after their commissioning.
In 1850 the academy was placed under the jurisdiction of the Navy's Bureau of Ordnance and Hydrography but was transferred to the Bureau of Navigation when that organization was established in 1862.
Following the 2003 US Air Force Academy sexual assault scandal and due to concern with sexual assault in the U.S. military the Department of Defense was required to establish a task force to investigate sexual harassment and assault at the United States military academies in the law funding the military for fiscal 2004.

Beginning in 1895, Dale served with the Maryland State Naval Militia and was renamed Oriole in November 1904.
USS Dale was named in honor of Commodore Richard Dale (1756-1826), who served in the Continental Navy during the Revolutionary War and in the United States Navy in the late 1790s and early 1800s.
