The rapid growth and the station's strategic importance to the U.S. prompted officials to redesignate the facility as a naval air station in 1981.
Land for Sigonella was therefore made available to the Navy on a temporary basis under the terms of an agreement with the Italian government June 25, 1957.

The plane was intercepted by United States Navy fighters on October 10 and directed to land at Naval Air Station Sigonella, a NATO base in Sicily, where the hijackers were arrested by the Italians after a disagreement between U.S. and Italian authorities.
The ship headed back towards Port Said, and after two days of negotiations the hijackers agreed to abandon the liner for safe conduct and were flown towards Tunisia aboard an Egyptian commercial airliner.
The other passengers on the plane (possibly including the hijackers' leader Abu Abbas) were allowed to continue on to their destination, despite protests by the United States.

The U.S. air campaign has been constrained by the distance pilots must fly and the midair refueling operations that must be maintained around the clock.
Tajik air bases near the Afghan border would improve the pilots' ability to patrol the skies for Taliban and terrorist targets, which can appear and disappear in a moment, a senior U.S. official said.

GAETA, Italy - Four crew members were injured when an MH-53E helicopter from Helicopter Combat Support Squadron (HC) 4, based at Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy, crashed on base Feb. 16 at approximately 4:20 p.m.
The four injured air crew have been transported to the Navy hospital at NAS Sigonella for evaluation and treatment.
