The Naval Air Station Willow Grove began in 1926 when Harold Pitcairn constructed a hanger and a grass airstrip in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania.
From 1926 to 1942 he used the airfield for design, development, construction and testing of a number of aircraft, including the Airwing which was put into use by the United States Postal Service.
Following the war it became a reserve training station, a duty it continues to this day.

Air Force officials said their overall plan - affecting active- duty, Air Guard and Air Reserve bases - was designed to make the service more effective by consolidating weapons systems and personnel as it moves to a smaller but smarter fleet.
Ultimately, the panel decided to close the base but keep intact the Air Guard unit that was subject to the lawsuit and create an Army Guard and Reserve center.

In 1994, the station’s name was changed to Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base, Willow Grove, to accurately depict the population and efforts of the station.

After his detachment in October of that year, he reported to the Naval Air Station, Norfolk, Va., as squadron pilot with Marine Attack Squadron 233, and later, as S-2 Officer with Marine Aircraft Reserve Group 20, serving in the latter capacity until August 1964.
