  Seabee History: World War II
With authorization to establish construction battalions at hand and the question of who was to command the Seabees settled, the Bureau of Yards and Docks was confronted with the problem of recruiting, enlisting, and training Seabees, and then organizing the battalions and logistically supporting them in their operations.
While the battalion itself was versatile enough to handle almost any project, it would have been a wasteful use of men to assign a full battalion to a project that could be done equally well by a smaller group of specialists.
This vast Naval Construction Force of 37,000 men spread out into the adjoining major islands and began building the facilities that were needed to make the Philippines a great forward base in the Pacific, indeed one of the last steps on the way to the invasion of the Japanese home islands.

The 79th Naval Construction Battalion was commissioned on February 1, 1943 at the Naval Construction Training Center, Norfolk, Virginia.
The 79th NCB assumed control of construction projects and base upkeep from battalions of the 4th Naval Construction Regiment of the 1st Naval Construction Brigade.
The 79th NCB was decommissioned on Okinawa on November 30.

The battalion served her country well in the dangerous island-hopping campaign to reclaim Japanese held islands in the South Pacific.
On 3 December, 1966, the battalion was recommissioned as a Naval Mobile Construction Battalion at ceremonies held on board the Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport, Mississippi.
The battalion was deployed on 20 October, 1970 to Bien Hoa, Vietnam in five flights.

The invasion of Iwo Jima began February 19, 1945, and the 133rd NCB was one of the Seabee battalions to accompany the invasion forces.
Naval Mobile Construction Battalion ONE THIRTY-THREE was recommissioned on August 12, 1966, in ceremonies at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport, MS, and another proud and quality construction-filled chapter began for the battalion.

The first Seabees were civilian construction workers who enlisted early in World War II to continue building for the Navy in the Pacific Theater and in Europe.
At one time there were nearly 25,000 sons of World War II Seabees in Vietnam building camps for America's armed forces, repairing roads, bridges and airstrips, teaching the tricks of their trade to the Vietnamese and building orphanages, schools, hospitals and market places during off-duty hours.
The staff for the Naval Construction Battalion Center had expanded to 183 military and 523 civilian personnel to support approximately 4,200 Seabees.

Douglas Luback, Chief Construction Mechanic Patrick Sabatini, Construction Mechanic 1st Class Daniel Johnson and Construction Mechanic 3rd Class Anthony Carrube were recognized by New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg for their active-duty service in the global war on terrorism.
NMCB 21 is based at Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst, N.J., with detachments at Naval Reserve Centers in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

It adopted a battalion logo (plaque) which again reflected a pair of dice thrown in an eleven pattern ("6" dice on the left, and "5" dice on the right" that was superimposed on an enlarged numerical "11".

On May 3, 1951, 6th Naval Construction Battalion was recommissioned as Mobile Construction Battalion SIX under the command of Cmdr. R.
Classes in construction, mechanics and other technical specialties were attended by MCB SIX Seabees at Davisville and in schools, both military and civilian, throughout the U.S. In May a small group of MCB SIX Seabees trained with MCB-121 at Camp Lejeune.
At ceremonies on November 14, the battalion lowered its colors and officially ceased to be a part of the active Navy.
