The Naval Historical Center (NHC) is mandated to collect, preserve, display, and make available for public use historical artifacts and artwork significant to the United States Navy's history and culture.
NHC is the custodian of the Navy's principal collection of art and artifacts with responsibility for its care and preservation.
NHC policy recommends excess material be offered to other Federal historical agencies for donation or exchanged before they are offered for exchange outside the Federal establishment.

 History of the Naval Historical Center
The Naval Historical Center traces its lineage to 1800 when President John Adams requested Benjamin Stoddert, the first Secretary of the Navy, to prepare a catalog of professional books for use in the Secretary’s office.
To handle World War I records in Washington, a Historical Section was established in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, separate from the Office of Naval Records and Library and housed in the new Navy Department (“Main Navy”) Building on Constitution Avenue.
In another organizational change in 1971, the Naval History Division was shifted out of the headquarters establishment and became the Naval Historical Center, a field activity under the Chief of Naval Operations.

Archaeologists and conservators are hopeful that once the bench is removed, they will discover new Hunley artifacts.
Scientists under the supervision of the Naval Historical Center (NHC) began work in February on the removal of the wooden bench the Civil War Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley's crew sat on to crank and propel it into world history.
The hand-cranked vessel was raised in 2000 and delivered to the Warren Lasch Conservation Center, located on the former Charleston Navy Yard, S.C., where an international team of scientists is at work conserving the vessel and piecing together clues to solve the mystery of its disappearance.

The historical data had languished on a computer hard drive of Ramon Jackson, who originally digitized and formatted the material.

The main text of the version on the web site is almost identical to that of the printed volume, but most of the photographs and some of the maps have been omitted from the version on the web site.
An index (go to the bottom of the page) gives links both to the whole thing as a huge (231MB).pdf file and to the individual chapters, some of which are pretty large files just by themselves.
Please note that U.S. Naval Forces, Vietnam, was a command in and for South Vietnam; it did not control naval operations against North Vietnam, or even the aircraft carriers off the coast conducting air strikes against targets in South Vietnam.
