In December 1951, the Postgraduate School moved across the nation, establishing its current campus in Monterey.
Under the terms set by the commission, the Navy will relinquish control of the Postgraduate School's classes and research projects to an oversight board (made up of a combination of representatives from the school and civilian educators), which will report to the Secretary of Defense.

The Naval Postgraduate School is part of the grounds and buildings of the Del Monte Hotel which was a deluxe vacation site for the wealthy and later, the Hollywood elite (1885-1943).
Navy secretary George Meyer started the school in naval engineering, attached to the Academy,(with general order No.27, June 9th 1909) and with general order No.233, (Oct. 31st 1912) this school was expanded to a Postgraduate Department.
With the closesure of Fort Ord in the mid 1990s, there was pressure to close the school and relocate elsewhere, due to the high cost of living on the central California coast.

Stationing a ship farther from the city defends a much greater area, has the potential for more kills, and allows for debris and the harmful effects of WMDs to fall into the sea, away from friendly territory.
Distant from land, a ship may be able to support other phases of the naval campaign and would be 'free to maneuver to avoid and combat other attacks, especially by enemy submarines that prey on ships whose maneuvers are too predictable.
