Naval Torpedo Station Newport Rhode Island
The Naval Torpedo Station, Goat Island, Newport, Rhode Island, was established in 1869 as a Navy experimental station for the development of torpedoes and torpedo equipment, explosives, and electrical equipment.
While the Torpedo Station staff continued its custodial responsibilities at the Goat Island installation, an increasing amount of research and development work (concentrating on underwater missiles and related equipment) was being relocated at Coddington Cove on the grounds of the Naval Training Station.
In 1969--the centennial anniversary of the Torpedo Station's establishment in Newport--the NUOS organization celebrated a century of Navy underseas technology.

Naval Station Newport has asked state regulators to lower its electricity rates at a time when the base is trying to make itself more attractive to decision-makers in Washington.
The naval station, which sits on 1,400 acres in Middletown and Newport, on the western shore of Aquidneck Island, plays a major role in the state's economy.
That would allow the naval station to notify the Department of Defense and the BRAC committee that rate reductions would likely be implemented, Narragansett Electric said.

 Museum
While the Museum is primarily for the education and the edification of the Naval War College community, it is in a larger sense the corporate memory of the Navy in the region, and it serves as a clearinghouse for naval history information in New England.
The Museum's themes are the history of naval warfare, particularly as studied at the College, and the naval heritage of Narragansett Bay—a tale that begins with the nation's colonial roots.
Besides permanent exhibits on the College, the genesis of the Navy in the region, and the evolution of permanent naval installations from the late nineteenth century to the present, the Museum features short-term special exhibits relating to College curriculum and to current naval-related topics.
