Naval artillery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Naval artillery or naval rifles refers to warship-mounted cannon used in naval warfare for attacking other vessels, bombarding targets on shore (naval gunfire support), or for anti-aircraft.
The crowning achievement of naval artillery was the Dreadnought-era battleship.
The dominance of the modern battleship was from about 1906 to the end of the Second World War during which typical main armament rose from 12 inch calibre guns to 15 or 16 inches with consequent increase on range and shell firepower.

"Artillery" is a general term covering several varieties of large-calibre weapons; currently these fire an explosive shell or rocket and are of such a size and weight as to require a specialized mount for firing and transport.
anti-aircraft artillery - artillery (usually mobile) that is dedicated to the ability to attack aircraft from the ground.
Modern field artillery is often self-propelled (permanently mounted in a carriage or vehicle capable of moving independently) in order to move quickly from one firing position to another - to both support the fluid nature of modern combat and to avoid 'counter-battery fire'.

 1.JmA -Heavy artillery at Leningrad
One of the most ferocious and large-scale battles employing the large number of heavy artillery units in the World War II took place in the vicinity of Leningrad, where the German advance was stopped on the outskirts of the city in autumn 1941, with the assistance of numerous coastal artillery of the Soviet navy.
The first explosions of German artillery shells within the city were registered on September 4, 1941, and in autumn the German command deployed three artillery regiments with the guns of 105-150 mm, reinforced by the two heavy artillery units of the High Command Reserve and several railway artillery platforms.
Artillery and airforce of the Leningrad front and Red-banner Baltic Fleet are not employed effectively and are not co-ordinated by a single commanding officer responsible for counter-battery actions.

Field artillery is organized at corps, division, and brigade levels with a specific command and control structure that enables the field artillery commander to accomplish dual responsibilities as a FSCOORD and an artillery commander.
When naval fire support is available and the general tactical situation permits its use, naval firepower can provide large volumes of devastating, immediately available, and responsive fire support to combat forces operating near coastal waters.

For one thing, naval artillery could not be expected to achieve the necessary steep trajectory required to knock out the forts.
Even should the naval bombardment prove successful the absence of ground troops would prevent the British from gaining command of the shorelines - and in the absence of supplies from the shore the naval fleet would necessarily have to return home to refuel and restock.
Meanwhile the French government, in the form of incoming naval minister Jean Augagneur, was reluctant to cede the possibility of a purely British naval success in the Mediterranean.

Rheinmetall AG - The Navy ordered guns from Heinrich Ehrhardt too: Naval artillery posed special challenges to engineers
And it is a fact that its Naval Systems division, which was taken over with retroactive effect by BAE Systems Deutschland GmbH on January 1st 2003, constituted much of Rheinmetall's naval expertise.
With the launch of the British battleship Dreadnought in 1906, an arms race at sea commenced which, in a few short years, would witness the construction of an ever-greater number of British and German battleships, which were ever-faster, ever-more heavily armoured, and equipped with ever-larger guns with ever-heavier calibres.
From the outset, shipboard artillery has always presented a tremendous challenge to engineers, because rather than operating from a fixed point, the guns are fired from a constantly rocking, perpetually moving platform — and are still expected to hit the target.

The dominance of the carrier in naval combat had become apparent more than two years prior at the Battle of Midway, and the obsolescence of the battleship, in turn, heralded the rapid decline of the gun as the primary weapon of the U.S. surface fleet.
This decline in the strength of naval artillery on U.S. destroyers took place over a period that saw the great Iowa class battleships, each with 9 16-inch guns (capable of propelling 1,900 pounds of high explosives up to 30 miles) and twenty 5-inch guns, disappear from the fleet altogether.
