	Naval history of Japan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		The naval history of Japan traces back to early interactions with states on the Asian continent at the beginning of the medieval period, and reached a peak of activity during the 16th and 17th century at a time of cultural exchange with European powers during the Nanban trade period.
		The decisive battle of the Genpei War was the 1185 naval engagement of Dan-no-ura between the fleets of the Minamoto and Taira clans.
		Naval students were sent to study in Western naval schools for several years, such as the future Admiral Enomoto (who studied in the Netherlands from 1862-1867), starting a tradition of foreign-educated future leaders such Admirals Togo and, later, Yamamoto.

	THE NAVY & RHODE ISLAND: A HISTORY
		In August of that year, the Naval Academy leased the Atlantic House Hotel, which was at the corner of Bellevue Avenue and Pelham Street, just up the street by Touro Park.
		In 1882 the Newport Poor House and Farm on the 92-acre Coasters Harbor Island was donated to the Navy by the City of Newport and the State of Rhode Island.
		One of the largest commands during this period was the Quonset Point Naval Air Station, located alongside the home of the Seabees, the Naval Base at Davisville.

		The Naval Order through his efforts and guidance, and with the concurrent encouragement of President Theodore Roosevelt, became the prime mover in organizing the Navy League of the United States, which was chartered in New York in 1902.
		Naval records and artifacts can be found today in many repositories including the National Archives, Federal Records Center, Library of Congress, and the Naval Historical Center, all in Washington, DC in the service academies and graduate schools and in many state historical and maritime museum collections.
		The Naval Order has elected to place its own records, including all original copes of Applications for Membership with their detailed narrative of eligibility, in the custody of the US Naval Institute at Annapolis, Maryland.

		While material derived from oral history may have flaws due to the frailties of the human mind and the occasional deception, a historian who carefully weighs the material derived from oral-history interviews can add much to a historical narrative.

		In fact, Operation Gaudo, a plan to sweep the Royal Navy from the waters surrounding Crete, was intended to demonstrate, after a number of one-sided encounters, that the Italians were still a force to be reckoned with.
		The plan called for a strong naval force to patrol the area north and south of Crete, sinking any British convoys or escort warships it might encounter.
		At their urging, and because of the general feeling at Supermarina (Italian naval headquarters) that an attempt should be made to re-establish the dynamics of conflict in the area, Operation Gaudo was born.

		The Naval Aviation History Office was established in January 1942.
		The general public should submit their requests in writing to Naval Historical Center, Naval Aviation History Branch, 805 Kidder Breese SE, Washington Navy Yard, Washington, D.C. Processing time for reference requests is 4 to 8 weeks.
		The office is open to the public weekdays, except Wednesdays, and researchers are welcome to visit the office to conduct their research.

	HISTORY
		By 1927, the Naval Training Station, whose primary mission was to operate 12 service schools and train new recruits, had been reduced considerably from its wartime status, training only 560 recruits at a command with triple that capacity.
		From a manpower viewpoint, Naval Air Station grew from an average of 2,076 officers and enlisted in December 1940 to 16,656 active duty in December 1943.
		The Naval Air Station also responded to national times of stress, such as Operation Sincere Welcome in 1994, when 2,000 civilian workers, dependents, and non-essential military personnel were evacuated to Norfolk from Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba.

		Although this is not an in-depth analysis or presentation of naval history, it does in my opinion delve into areas that are not in the mainstream of typical historical overviews, for which I am personally grateful.

		Racing seaward, she was the first naval vessel at the scene of the disaster, and the task of search and rescue coordination was thus hers.
		Two weeks later she participated in the Naval Battle of Guadaleanal (12-15 November) which resulted in heavy damage to both forces but broke up the determined Japanese effort to disrupt the landing of 6,000 American troops on Guadaleanal, to bombard Henderson Field, and to land reinforcements.
