  NAFFF
A fundamental issue of the NAFFF project has been the investigation of the potential to integrate navigation systems for vehicles into mobile units for cyclists and pedestrians, the main focus being on the common use of digital maps.
The on-board unit of the vehicle provides the possibility to pick out a number of special digital maps which may be transferred to the mobile unit (with its limited memory and calculation capability).
The main object was the analysis of positioning components in the field of navigation for pedestrians and cyclists.

A map is a graphic representation of a portion of the earth’s surface drawn to scale, as seen from above.
Those maps with scales of 1:1,000,000 and smaller are used for general planning and for strategic studies.
Those maps with scales of 1:75,000 and larger are used for tactical, administrative, and logistical planning.

Joergs Motorcycle pages: Navigation and GPS
I have been successfully navigating with paper maps for more than 20 years, and they are still my primary and preferred means to plan a trip.
The use of the GPSr as a "real" navigational aid was intended only for particular occasions - either when I could not use the map easily (at night or in a downpour), or when I needed to get to a certain address in an unknown city.
Depending on the map sets you use, this is enough for most applications, but it can get a bit tight on trips that spread over large geographical areas, or that include many large cities.

Due to the way in which map data is licensed from the Ordnance Survey, the size of the map is fairly limited, so you are pretty much limited to printing a single route at once.

Digital Navigation for Kayakers - Feb.2005 Sea Kayaker Magazine (p. 1 of 5)
My spouse tells me “digital navigation” is when she points in the direction she wants to go and says, “Let’s paddle that way.” What I mean by “digital navigation” is using personal-computer, Internet and GPS resources to plan, undertake, enhance and review kayak trips.
The focus of this article is on using digital navigation for sea kayaking, but because digital navigation has been evolving and expanding rapidly over the past few years, and to my knowledge, there are no primary or comprehensive information sources, this article will necessarily be incomplete and out of date.
Maps, on the other hand, are much better at showing topology, such as streams, valleys, glaciers, mountains and, to some degree, even vegetation.

The muted white and gray background of the map allows these elements to draw the eye, and the image is devoid of clutter, highlighting the few key pieces of information I intend the observer to learn.

OA Guide to Map and Compass - Part 1
All maps will have some basic features in common and map reading is all about learning to understand their particular "language." You'll end up using a variety of maps to plan and run your trip but perhaps the most useful map is a topographic map.
The map location is given by the latitude and longitude of the southeast (lower right) corner of the quadrangle.
In addition, a USGS map includes latitude and longitude as well as the names of the adjacent maps (depicted on the top, bottom, left side, right side and the four corners of the map).

Navigation for walkers - Practical walking advice - Information - Ramblers' Association
Maps are simply an accurate picture of the ground as seen from above, scaled down from life size and with symbols to show particular features and landmarks.
On a 1:25 000 map such as an Ordnance Survey (OS) Explorer (see Maps), 1 unit of length on the map represents 25,000 units on the ground, so 1cm on the map represents 25,000cm, that is 250m or 0.25km, on the ground.
From the map you should recognise overall height, the steepness of slopes (for example, tightly-packed contours mean a steep slope), and the major natural landforms such as valleys, ridges and spurs.

Land navigation using map and compass
This is because the greater the distance to a landmark, the greater the likelihood of error in determining the azimuth.

Map - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pre-modern maps, and mapping traditions outside the Western tradition, often merge geography with non-scientific cosmography, showing the relationship of the viewer to the universe.
Road maps are perhaps the most widely used maps today, and form a subset of navigational maps, which also include aeronautical and nautical charts, railroad network maps, and hiking and bicycling maps.
For example, maps designed for the hiker are often scaled at the ratio 1:24,000, meaning that 1 of any unit of measurement on the map corresponds to 24,000 of that same unit in reality; while maps designed for the motorist are often scaled at 1:250,000.

The secret often lies in the fact that the world portrayed on a map represents a kind of international language of its own, which allows you to easily determine the map's accuracy and to decode its colors, symbols, and labels.

Today, navigation map databases are inaccessible from applications other than navigation and stored in the proprietary format of the navigation system.
In order for ADAS applications to access such information as map data, vehicle position and speed - which currently could be provided by navigation, but may change in the future - it is necessary to define and develop appropriate API between ADAS and the source of this data.

ACFR- Research - Navigation - Map building   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The simultaneous localisation and map building (SLAM) problem asks if it is possible for an autonomous vehicle to start in an unknown location in an unknown environment and then to incrementally build a map of this environment while simultaneously using this map to compute absolute vehicle location.
At ACFR we have a substantial research group addressing these key issues and are in the process of mapping out a methodology for the future deployment of two challenging large-scale SLAM systems one in a sub-sea environment and one in an unmanned air-borne vehicle.
The SLAM map consists of estimates of the position of retro-reflective strips that have been mounted in an office environment.
