Navoiy is a city (pop 117,600 in 1999) and the capital of Navoiy Province in the southwestern part of Uzbekistan.
Originally known as Kermine ("Karmana") under the Emirate of Bukhara, the city was re-founded in 1958, under the name of the great Uzbek poet and statesman Alisher Navoi, who wrote in Persian and Chaghatai at the court of Emir Husein Boykara (or Husayn Bayqaro) in Herat.

TASHKENT, March 25 (Reuters) - Uzbekistan's state-run Navoiy Mining and Metallurgical Combine has won the right to develop a gold field with reserves of over 50 tonnes in the Central Asian state's west, a government official said on Thursday.
The official, who declined to be named, said Navoiy -- Uzbekistan's largest gold producer and still known under its Soviet name NGMK -- could now start exploration and commercial production at the Dzhamansai field in the Karakalpakstan autonomous region.
Navoiy alone produces annually over 60 tonnes of gold, with Uzbekistan's total output in excess of 82 tonnes.
