	Navvy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Navvy is a shorter form of the word 'navigator' and is particularly applied to describe the manual labourers working on major civil engineering projects.
		The construction of canals in Britain was superseded by contracts to construct railway projects from 1830 onwards, which developed into the railway manias, and the same term was applied to the workmen employed on building rail tracks, their tunnels, cuttings and embankments.
		Navvies working on railway projects typically continued to work using hand tools, supplemented with explosives (particularly when tunnelling, and to clear obdurate difficulties).

	Steam & Engine of Australia - Working Steam Navvy
		On a tourist visit to Alcatraz I came across this giant steam powered navvy floating crane helping out with the dockside construction.
		Being construction workers they were not exactly helpful about letting me get near the crane, and there was no way to talk to the crane driver to get more details...

		My Shorter OED tells me it is an abbreviation of navigator but somehow that doesn’t seem likely.
		Later in the century it become the usual term for any labourer working on construction projects.
		It was so firmly attached to the idea of excavation that when the first mechanical digger came into service in the 1870s it was called a steam navvy.
